Every week, just at the start of the weekend, we catch up with the WoW.com staff and ask them, “What are you playing this week?” (Otherwise known as WRUP!) Join us to see what we’re up to in and out of game — and catch us in the comments to let us know what you’re playing, too!

I have to admit it: I’m just not into all of the StarCraft 2 hype. It’s a bit awkward since practically everyone I know — and a lot of the WoW.com staff — seems to be excited about SC2 above all else. So I’m attempting to turn things around, at least for the duration of this post, with this week’s WRUP. In addition to asking what everyone’s playing this weekend, I’ve asked for everyone’s thoughts on the ongoing Cataclysm beta test. Well, it might have taken their minds off SC2 for a minute, at least …

Everyone’s answers — and your chance to add your own — after the break.

(SPOILER NOTE FROM THROGG — THIS ARTICLE MIGHT HAVE HABERDASHERY BASED SPOILERS ABOUT CATACLYSM.)

“Oh,” Lolegolas said, tossing a cascade of blonde ribbons over his shoulder like a wheat fountain. “Throgg, I must say. I must take it all back. That haberdasher you’ve seen has performed a miracle for you.”

Throgg blinked. “Not Christmas, little belfling. I do not have her Dasher.”

Lolegolas held perfectly still, blinking at the orc with confused eyes. “Have her Dash … oh! Oh, no! I meant haberdasher. The hatter you must have visited. For the hat you are wearing is quite marvelous!”

“You really like it? It is Lord Walden’s Top Hat. It does nothing for me,” Throgg said in slow, careful words. He nudged the front of the hat up slightly, letting his unibrow shine in the sunlight.

“I must disagree, fair Throgg,” Lolegolas said, waving away the comment with his perfectly manicured fingers. “It does wonders for the shape of your skull. It’s gone from being quite block-shaped to something more like a rectangle. Your entire face is far more geometrically sound now.”

“No,” Throgg said. “I mean, it has no stats on it. It does nothing. But it sure looks nice.”

“Well, then, Throgg,” Lolegolas said. “Why are you wearing it?”

The orc smiled as he slid a monocle onto his nose. “Take up banking.”

Name Lord Walden’s Top Hat
Damage Immense to the hearts and romances of those around you
How to get it It’s a quest item in Cataclysm. You must handle the Betrayal at Tempest’s Reach.
How to get rid of it You sell it to some soulless vendor for 1 copper.

A week or so ago, someone the Cataclysm beta forums complained that the Maelstrom’s appearance in the upcoming expansion just wasn’t epic enough. It’s a pretty silly thing to say. Valnoth, aka WoW’s Lead World Designer, Alex Afrasiabi, apparently agreed, and responded with the following:

Re: The Maelstrom?
Maybe I missed the memo on levels of “epicosity” or something, but I’m pretty sure the Maelstrom is a CLASS 10 epic zone. Though I guess it is missing sharks with laser beams patrolling the waters and Arthur Fonzarelli jumping across it with water skis. And dinosaurs.

And then, a bit later, posted:

Re: The Maelstrom?
After reading this post I called for a meeting with TOP TOP MEN (that’s two tops) in order to figure out a solution to the problem at hand. Frankly, I think we hit a home run. The next 4.0 build (or the one after) should have a Maelstrom that’s between 10 – 50x more epic than what currently exists.

Buckle yourselves into your computer chairs or face being blown away!

And sure enough, as promised, this latest beta build has turned the “Epic” dial up to 11 where the Maelstrom is concerned. Flying around it is Epicus Maximus <Paragon of Epicosity>, a level 90 elite shark, who is being ridden by an elite rare devilsaur named <And a Dinosaur> riding a rocket and manning (dinosauring?) a laser beam, who is being ridden by an undead mage playing guitar named <Rock On>.

That should suffice.

Twilight Highlands and Uldum aren’t technically open yet in the Cataclysm beta, but when have invisible walls ever stopped someone who really wanted to get into a zone? Resourceful tester Lemon King sends us these monster galleries of questing through both zones, although both are unfinished (especially Uldum). Even so, they look beautiful, and there are some nice surprises in the quests. Obviously, spoilers abound!

Check out the galleries by clicking below.

And we’re done for tonight folks, thanks for tuning in!

The WoW.com team is streaming again tonight over on our Justin.tv channel, or you can simply watch via the embed above. Tonight Anne Stickney will be showing us the continuing adventures of Lunchmeat the human hunter accompanied by her trusty wolf Spam, playing through Elwynn Forest, Westfall and beyond!

We have no scheduled end time for this particular stream; Anne will just go as long as she pleases. Pop some popcorn, pull up a chair and enjoy. We’re also in the chat channel over there if you want to drop by and say hello!

Choose the adventures of the WoW.com staff as we level our characters in <It came from the Blog> on Zangarmarsh (US-PvE-H).

I still have many moving chores to do, but if I do play tonight, I’ll be cheating on you and Robinemia by playing Roblin the Goblin. Or maybe I should play Robiness the Worgeness. Hmmmm … I feel a poll coming on. But polls are for Friday. Wednesday is advice and story day. First, here’s the schedule

  • Amy Schley as Patent, the level 23 troll rogue: Thursday, 10 p.m. EDT
  • Lisa Poisso as Prupher the proofreading druid (Lisiel just didn’t fit a tauren): Thursday, 10 p.m. EDT
  • Fox Van Allen as Foxlight, the level 22 blood elf paladin: Friday, 8 p.m. EDT
  • Michael Sacco as Sahko, the orc warlock; Christian Belt, as Selfloathius, the level 16 blood elf warlock; Elizabeth Harper as Faience, the level 24 troll shaman; Matthew Rossi as Andrenorton, the level 17 troll mage; Michael Gray as Grayfields, the level 17 tauren hunter; and Gregg Reece as Sandwichdoc, the level 15 troll shaman, will be making appearances as they can.

Advice for Foxlight and stories are after the break.

Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting feral/restoration druids and those who group with them. This week, we continue to get hit in the face.

This week, we’re continuing our series on Pulling 101 with a look at what happens during the dungeon itself. I was surprised to discover exactly how much of this advice concerns rage management, but shouldn’t have been; any discussion concerning how to pull as a rage tank invariably touches on how to get the most out of an eccentric resource system. A good chunk of this advice will become obsolete as of the Cataclysm content patch, but if you’re leveling and gearing a bear through the dungeon finder, there are still an awful lot of 5-mans between yourself and this fall.

Welcome to another edition of the WoW.com Weekly Comic, Byron the Tauren Rogue!

Gruuka was taken down in cold blood (because that’s what rogues do), and now Evi is relishing in her minor victory (as rogues do). I wonder if Byron will take any initiative and fight back — because, well, that’s just what rogues do.

Check out the full version right here, and tune in next Tuesday morning for a new page. You can also see all the previous pages in the gallery below.
